Gilsdorf - Schirmeck
Luxemburg - Lotharingen

We started the section Luxembourg - Lorraine already in 2012 without actually knowing it. In search for a long weekend hiking in Luxembourg we decided to link up the Maurice Cosyn trail and the Lower Sure trail. Then, in 2013, when we decided to do the GR5 we discovered that we had in fact already walked a piece.

In August 2014 we continued from our end point of May 2012 (Born) for a few days more to Remich, but we didn't get much further that year. In 2015 we picked it up again and in one week in May we managed to get to Ars-sur-Moselle, close to Metz. At the end of July we continued from there and defying the heat we made it to Schirmeck, thus finishing the section "Luxembourg - Lorraine".

What did we find remarkable of this section?
  • The diversity: wineries along the Moselle in Luxembourg, mining industry around Thionville, forest between Metz and Nancy, fields of cereal between Pompey and the Vosges and in the end the first mountains.
  • The most beautifull: passing through wineries from Wasserbillig to just beyond Remich. Really great!
  • The most impressive: the trenches in the forest close to Pont-a-Mousson
  • The ugliest: the mining towns around Thionville. Algrange, Rosselange, Rombas....it made us sad.
And we have come to the final conclusion that Luxembourg is not ideal. Beautiful country, good wine, nice people....but TOO MUCH TARMAC!
