Bike
I didn't use any special equipment with respect to my bike. I did carry a foldable outer tube with me, just in case.
My randonneur was good enough to withstand the inland route though a mountain bike would be more practical.

Maps and books
I've two different kinds of maps: the 9 topographic maps 1:250,000 of Landmælingar Íslands and a 1:500,000 overview map made by Freytag & Berndt.
Additionally I carried around the Lonely Planet book "Iceland, Greenland and the Faroes Islands" and the very useful German book "Island per Rad" written by Ulf Hoffmann. It helps of course when you speak German...

Other material remarks
For those who use Camping Gaz for cooking: the standard butane cans for for instance the Bleuet 206 are not available in Iceland. They use the newer cans with butane/propane mixture. This is of course because pure butane remains liquid when the temperature drops below freezing while the mixture can still be used when having (light) frost.
